Moving Day Essentials to Have on Hand

You’ve closed on your new Chicagoland home and now it’s time to schedule the movers! With so much to plan, pack, and coordinate, it’s easy to overlook a few important things that can make a big difference come moving day.

As you prepare for your move into your new Lexington home, here are some essentials you should keep with you to make your move in day go smoothly.

Keys

Don’t laugh! This one may seem obvious but we often forget the most obvious things. Save yourself time and headaches by making sure you have the keys to your new home on hand.

Small overnight bag

Chances are you won’t unpack and set up your home the same day you move in. Plan ahead by packing an overnight bag for each member of the family. Include a change of clothes, pajamas, medications, and toiletries like toothpaste, toothbrush, and shower essentials including towels, a shower curtain, and toilet paper. You’ll appreciate being able to clean up and change clothes after a long day.

Important documents

Keep at least one form of identification on you during the move. You may also need to keep your paperwork for your new home on hand, and any important contact phone numbers for your moving company, financial institutions, lender, and home builder (if applicable).

A toolkit

Moving day is full of surprises and you may need to put something back together. Prepare a simple tool kit so you can handle quick repair jobs on the day of. Some essential items to include are:

  • Hammer
  • Multiple sizes of screwdrivers
  • Measuring tape
  • Utility knife
  • Pliers
  • Flashlight
  • Scissors
  • Paper towel
  • Markers

Basic cleaning supplies

Even if you’re moving into a brand-new home, you may want to wipe down the surfaces, especially once the movers have left. Some supplies to bring include: paper towels, multipurpose cleaner, rags and sponges, dishwashing soap, broom and dustpan, and toilet cleaner. 

Clean bedding and pillows

After a long and busy day, you’ll want to get a good night’s rest. Bring clean sheets and bedding so you can make a comfortable bed, even if it’s just a mattress on the floor. You’ll feel more settled when you get to sleep in your own bed at night.

Batteries and chargers

It’s easy to forget these things until you need them. Bring extra batteries and chargers so your electronics are in working order when you need them.

Eating essentials

You’re going to be busy managing your moving day so chances are good you may not think about eating until you’re starving. Keep water and light snacks like protein bars, granola, or fruit so your family can snack on during the day in case they get a hungry. Most people opt for takeout the first night so packing disposable plates, cups, and cutlery means you don’t have to worry about remember to request plates from the restaurant.

Moving takes a lot of preparation and can be overwhelming. But knowing what essential items to keep on hand will save you from some frustration the day off.  You can pack many of these items into an essentials box (mark it accordingly!) so everything is easily accessible the day of.
